Types of Sedation Dentistry
It’s important to us that you feel comfortable and calm at our Jacksonville dental implant office! We prioritize our patients’ comfort and well-being above all else.
To help ease any anxiety or discomfort before and during your dental implant procedure, we offer nitrous oxide sedation, oral conscious sedation and IV conscious sedation.
For your comfort
We understand that the idea of dental procedures can be uncomfortable or anxiety-inducing. With our sedation dentistry options, we can minimize discomfort and stress! Sedation allows us to provide top-quality dental implant care while ensuring that you have a positive and pain-free experience throughout the entire process.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is a colorless gas that induces a relaxed state. When inhaled, nitrous oxide will make you feel calm, spacey, warm and tingly. You’ll remain completely conscious and able to communicate with us while breathing in nitrous oxide. You’ll just feel more at ease and stress-free!
If you choose nitrous oxide sedation, you’ll inhale the gas by wearing a breathing mask. The effects of nitrous oxide will wear off within five minutes of us removing the mask and you breathing oxygen again.
Nitrous oxide is a mild sedation option and is safe and effective. Dr. Montoya and our team will explain what you can expect with this sedation dentistry option and guide you through the process.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral sedation involves the use of conscious sedation drugs to create a deeper level of relaxation. With this sedation option, you’ll be prescribed medication prior to your appointment.
Conscious sedation drugs allow our patients to remain conscious throughout the procedure, while experiencing a deep sense of calm and relaxation. The medications induce a drowsy and dream-like state, which allows you to feel detached from the procedure and unaware of any potential discomfort.
You’ll be breathing on your own and will still be able to respond to Dr. Montoya’s instructions. If conscious sedation is right for you, Dr. Montoya will determine which medications are best for you!
IV Conscious Sedation
IV Conscious sedation, also called intravenous sedation, is another sedation option that can help you feel deeply relaxed and anxiety-free, while keeping you conscious.
IV conscious sedation is similar to oral conscious sedation; the difference is how the medication is administered. With this technique, we safely administer sedative medications directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous line.
IV conscious sedation is especially beneficial for patients with dental anxiety or those undergoing extensive implant procedures. It allows you to be comfortable and stress-free throughout the procedure, but you will still be conscious, responsive, and can breathe on your own. IV conscious sedation does not require an anesthesiologist.
Sedation Vs. Anesthesia
What’s the difference between our conscious sedation options and general anesthesia?
Conscious sedation involves using a gas or medications to help you relax and ease anxiety, but you will still be conscious, responsive and breathing on your own. General anesthesia is typically performed in a hospital setting and would cause you to be completely unconscious, breathing through a tube.
While sedation is commonly used for minor to moderate anxiety and discomfort, anesthesia is often administered for pain control during extensive or invasive dental surgeries.
